Q & A:

How do we benefit from martial arts training?

Martial arts training can lead to development of health and fitness with cardiovascular improvement, loss of weight and enhancement of overall flexibility.  In addition, improvements in discipline, self respect, and confidence usually also result from martial arts training.  Middle aged or older adults should consult with their family physician before beginning any exercise program.

Can martial arts be taught without Asian religious influence?

Yes, Master Randy has been doing this for years.  In martial arts, there must be a focal point.  We choose that focal point to be our Lord Jesus.  No eastern religious or spiritual concepts are taught in any aspect.  Basic Christian principles of compassion and mercy are continually reinforced in the training classes.

Is martial arts training inconsistent with basic Christian beliefs?

Didn’t Jesus say, “turn the other cheek?”  Isn’t self defense against Christian principles?  Jesus statement about turning the cheek is about our response to an insult.  He also taught that we should not be vengeful.  However, soldiers came to John the Baptist for instruction and he didn’t tell them to quit their post.  Soldiers and law enforcement personnel became Christians in the book of Acts.  The defense of the innocent, and self defense, are principles accepted in the Bible.  Our goal at Cross Bend Christian Church is to add value to the lives of people in our community.  We believe our martial arts program will be of benefit to those who choose to participate.

What is the big deal about belts?

The different color belts simply signify achievement of basic and then advanced martial arts skills.  The skills include hand and foot strikes, blocks, body mechanics and movement and involve technique, timing, balance, power, and focus.  The belt color sequence is beginner (white, yellow, orange), intermediate (green, blue, purple), advanced (red, brown, brown), and then black.  The general public considers the black belt to signify an expert level, but it traditionally denotes a serious student with an excellent foundation of the basics and ready to polish his/her skills.

Does Rising Son Martial Arts participate in tournaments?

As a martial art, KOMBIDO challenges students to further excel their individual skills; therefore, Rising Son Martial Arts does not participate in tournaments.  Rather, as a school, twice a year we host a community exhibition in which students may invite family and friends to observe and better understand his/her skills with others of similar training as well as see the skills of more advanced students.  The end result of training is not to win or lose, but to improve, have fun, and learn self defense skills.  Rising Son Martial Arts exhibitions are excellent family-friendly venues for martial arts displays.
